The epiphany and the Befana in Italy

Between religion and folk law ...

We have to go back in time to discover the origins of this tradition and story of a battle between good and evil. It dates back to Latin paganism, when, twelve days after the December solstice, the beautiful goddess, Diana, was said to fly over the fields and bring fertility and good omens, and so the Romans exchanged gifts to the goddess in hope of prosperity.

The early centuries after Christ saw the Roman Church condemn all pagan traditions, accusing Pagans of Satanism; even the flight of the Goddess Diana was abolished, but her figure was reused in other guises, as a kind of good witch.

The legend, now rooted in Neapolitan legend goes that the three kings, on their way to Bethlehem, got lost and asked an old lady for directions, but the woman was reluctant to help. She later felt guilty about this, prepared a basket of sweets and went out in search of the hut where the little baby lay. She knocked at every house, and left sweets for all of the children she met ... and she continues to search for Jesus today, leaving sweets as she goes.

In keeping with Neapolitan tradition, you always find a Befana in the neighbourhood who gives candy and coal to adults and children!

There are many associations and organizations organise fun activities and events for children who have been waiting for the Befana.
