Fuerteventura is an island off the coast of Africa and is part of the Canary archipelago. The island is the oldest in the Canary Islands and is one of the least populated with around 150 kilometres of wonderful beaches.
History
The island was initially inhabited by settlers from North Africa who lived in caverns and underground dwellings and they wore shoes made of goatskin, called Mahos, a name that is still used today to refer to the people of Fuerteventura, the Mahorero.
Places to visit
Lobos, a natural park on the island is an oasis that is inhabited by monk seals and sea lions. Betancuira the main town on Fuerteventura was founded in the fifteenth century. La Concha en el Cotillo is a beautiful beach with fine white sand. Another Natural Park is Parque Natural de Corralejo, which has nine kilometres of beach and dunes that look like a desert. Playa de Cofete is the most famous beach that has twelve kilometres of beautiful beach. The island of Fuerteventura offers tourists lots of beaches where water sports are available. One of the most interesting beaches is Pozo negro, which is volcanic and has dark sand. Garcey is surrounded by impressive cliffs and Barlovento which is around 15 kilometres from civilisation is a true pristine paradise.
