Guide of Santa Teresa Di Gallura

Santa Teresa di Gallura is a small village on the northern coast of Sardinia overlooking the Bocche di Bonifacio it is surrounded by one of the most beautiful and coveted landscapes on the whole island.

History

Santa Teresa di Gallura owes its name to its creator, Vittorio Emanuele I of Savoy, who here decided to create a village here in 1800 and he chose to name it after his wife Maria Teresa. In the past, it was an important port because it was from here that granite was extracted from the surrounding area and exported to Rome.

During the XIV century, the village was under the Aragonese, who built a castle here, which was later destroyed from attacks from the Genoese. In 1720 the island passed into hands of the Savoy along with the tower of Longosardo and a town was created around the fortress.

Places to visit

Santa Teresa di Gallura has some military architecture to explore, the Battery Ferrero, which are the ruins of a fort from the Second World War that also housed rail links used for the transport of granite and war materials. Do not miss the Tower of Longosardo, which is a place steeped in history. Be sure to take a walk through the streets of Santa Teresa di Gallura to admire the religious buildings, such as the Church of Santa Lucia and the Church of Santa Reparata, but above all be sure to visit the small rural gem of the Church of the Madonna del Buon Cammino.

Beaches

Rena Bianca is a nice bay with fine white sand, located near the centre of the town. La Marmorata is also near the centre and has many amenities such as umbrellas and deck chairs. Santa Reparata is the best beach for diving with its clear water and rocky beach. Santa Teresa's best beach is the cala Lunga, also called, Valle della Luna, it is a marvellous place with many golden sandy coves surrounded by granite cliffs.
