Piombino is on the Etruscan coast and has always been an important port city and in 1800, it was known as Napoleon's sister, Elisa Bonaparte’s "little Paris".
History
The city of Piombino has an important past, and there are even remains from the Etruscan period. It is thought that the name Piombino, is derived from Populino, meaning small and in the medieval period, Piombino suffered attacks and looting and so became smaller and smaller. There are also traces of Germanic populations, particularly the Goths in the city. In 1022 the monastery of San Giustiniano di Falesia became important because it encouraged growth through fishing and navigation activities.
Places to visit
The Castle from the XIII century in Medicea added a fortress in 1500. Over the centuries there has been renovation and restoration on it and it was even used as a prison at one point. The last restoration was completed in 2001 repairing the sixteenth-century structure and today it houses the Museum of the Castle and the City. Do not miss the Piazza Bovio with its marvellous view of the sea and the island of Elba. The piazza is built on a rocky spur and acts as a balcony with panoramic views. We recommend a walk through the streets of the city centre to the Torrione, the ancient gateway to the city. The main street, the Corso Vittorio Emanuele, is also very elegant to walk down until you reach the impressive Palazzo Comunale and the Clock Tower.
Beaches
One of the most beautiful and renowned beaches is Buca delle Fate located in a small cove on the Etruscan coast, with crystal clear water and rocky seabed. Calamoresca is another very popular beach with lush vegetation that slopes towards the sea. One of the few sandy beaches is Salivoli and is often frequented by families; it has two bathing areas with amenities.
