Guide of Linosa

Linosa is 50 km from Lampedusa, 167 km from Sicily and only 165 km from the African continent. The ancient history of Linosa is turbulent, despite being a very small and remote it has been famous since ancient times and we find it mentioned in the works of Strabo and Pliny the Elder. The human settlement on the island was due to the colonial policy of the Bourbons, it began with just thirty inhabitants that came from Ustica, Agrigento and Pantelleria in 1845. Before then, the island was probably just used on occasional basis by pirates and seasonal fishermen. The island has always based its economy mainly on agriculture and cattle breeding, but today these activities have been gradually replaced by tourism.

Places to visit

The island has a circular shape and has eleven kilometres of coastline and is a volcanic island, in fact, the whole island is a natural reserve. The island is famous for its excellent lentils, capers, prickly pears and strangely, the papaya. The most famous local dish is lentil soup, which is a simple but incredibly tasty and healthy dish. During the summer months the tourists find hospitality from the locals who live in beautiful little coloured houses. Among the various services for tourists, there are some diving schools, boat, car, moped and bike rentals. There are two military lookouts on M. Rosso and M. Vulcano to visit, the "Fossa del Cappellano" and the birthplace of Berta Maggiore.

Beaches

It is a good idea to go around the island on a boat that way you can admire the beach of Pozzolana di Ponente, which is the area where the "Caretta caretta" turtles lay their eggs. There is also the Faraglioni, the Grotta del Greco and the Fili. An even more adventurous thing to do is take a diving trip and discover the seabed as it is exceptionally rich in marine flora and fauna as well as archaeological findings.
