Guide of Alicudi

Alicudi is an island in the Aeolian archipelago, situated off the coast of Sicily. The island is dominated by the Filo dell'Arpa mountain, which is an extinct volcano! The island is divided into five areas, the port, Contrada Tonna, San Bartolo, Contrada Pianicello and Contrada Sgurbio.

A brief history of Alicudi

Alicudi was already inhabited by the Neolithic period and archaeological evidence for this has been found in the port area. Alicudi was uninhabited by a settled population, but pirates occupied the island on and off until about 1600. Eventually, people came back to work on the island and lived off fishing and agriculture, although farming was difficult due to the scarcity of water. However, this problem was solved through the construction of tanks to collect water.

Where to visit

The views and the atmosphere on Alicudi are fascinating, it is a land that has seen so many populations come and go and it still bears the signs of its somewhat complicated past. When you visit Alicudi be sure not to miss a long walk along the mule tracks to immerse yourself in wild Mediterranean nature. In Contrada Tonna you can enjoy some typical Aeolian architecture, there are cute little houses with stone steps and dry stone walls, along Via Crucis life is bustling and there are newsstands on every corner. In San Bartolo why not visit the Church dedicated to the Patron Saint of the Aeolian Islands.

The beaches around Alicudi

The beaches on Alicudi are all extraordinarily beautiful, but not all of them are reachable on foot. There is a pebble beach within walking distance of Alicudi Port, it has crystal clear waters and lovely little fishing boats around. Bazzina beach is a charming little inlet and can only be reached by boat. It has clear, shallow waters that are perfect for snorkelling, to discover the magic of the seabed.
