Guide of Aegina

Aegina is a Greek island in the Saronic Gulf that has a great atmosphere, blue waters, pine-covered mountains, long beaches and picturesque countryside and villages. It is a perfect destination for nature lovers. According to Greek mythology in ancient times King Eachus, the son of Zeus and Aegina, reigned from the island and this is where the island takes its name. In the 5th century BC, the Athenians made this island their naval base and it was at this time that many temples were constructed on the island as a result of economic development. The island's capital is Aegina Town which is important because of its port used by passenger ferries and fishing boats. In the summer this island becomes very busy with tourists who come to the island on their private boats and yachts to spend the night and continue their journey to Athens.

Places to visit

Near the capital of Aegina, you should visit the archaeological site of Kolona, an ancient temple dedicated to the divinity of Apollo of which only one column remains today. The most interesting site in Aegina is the temple of Athena Afaia, the local goddess of the island.  The Doric temple is located on a high peninsula in the north-west, it is one of the best preserved ancient buildings on the island.

Beaches

Souvala is not to be missed, it is 10 km from the capital and is famous for its hot and cold sulphurous springs. The beach has light sand and fine gravel with beautiful clear water. Agia Marina beach is one of the few sandy beaches on the island, 13 km from Aegina Town. This beach is very popular with those who enjoy water sports, from canoeing to sailing.
