Patras is the gateway to the Greek continent and is home to a very important and historical port.
History
Patras has been inhabited for at least 4000 years and so many cultures and populations have come and gone throughout history. During the Bronze Age Patras was a Mycenaean stronghold. Then the Romans came under Augustus and made it an imperial colony, then in the Middle Ages, the Byzantine era and during the Crusades, it was a thriving port. In 1400 Patras was a Venetian colony then it became an Ottoman colony.
Places to visit
When strolling around the city do not miss a visit to the Byzantine fortress, which was first handed to the Franks, then the Normans and in the XII century step it went into the hands of the Turks. The Basilica of Sant'Andrea Apostolo is beautiful and houses the relics of the saint, the interior is a blaze of marble and has an altar under the dome. There is also a Roman theatre in Patras called the Odeon, which was built on top of a Greek structure.
Beaches
Lambiri Beach is not far from the city; it is a pebble beach with crystal clear waters. You can also enjoy a pleasant seafood lunch here thanks to the restaurants. For those who want to spend a day on a quiet beach, Psathopyrgos is ideal. For those looking for fun, the Rio beach is good because in addition to the beautiful sea and fine sand, there are many bars with music until late at night.
