Guide of Chalki

Halki is a small and quiet little island near the more famous Rhodes. This is a mountainous island, harsh and arid that has only a few inhabitants and many goats. It is perennially covered by wildflowers, thyme, marjoram and oregano. With an almost lunar appearance and beaten by the winds, Halki offers its visitors wild and marvellous landscapes, jagged coasts and beautiful beaches hidden among secluded coves.

Facts about the island

The island currently has very few inhabitants although in antiquity it had periods of economic wealth thanks to the copper mines that were exploited for centuries and from which the island derives its name. In addition to copper, the island has always been famous for fishing and the sponge trade. This activity ended in the mid-twentieth century when the resources were depleted and the fishermen had to go further to the African coast to find more. This made the island very poor and most of the inhabitants emigrated to the United States. The island is a perfect destination for those in search of peace and tranquility. The few tourists that come here are the type of people who are looking for a holiday in contact with unspoiled nature. And nature is difficult to dominate but opens the mind and strengthen the body as Halki is entirely pedestrian and there are few houses. The main village, Emborion is a jewel with its multicoloured houses overlooking the harbour, it is full of taverns and restaurants where you can savour the true Greek atmosphere away from the mass tourism in other popular islands.

Beaches

Halki has few beaches but wonderful pure and crystalline water. Pondamos is worth noting and is the most famous beach, it is made of fine sand. Ftenagia is equally as beautiful for its multicoloured pebbles.
